Adam Schiff, a current member of the U.S. Congress representing California's 30th district, shared a series of tweets on January 27, 2025, highlighting the story of Erika and her experiences during World War II.
In one tweet, Schiff recounts how "Erika had attended Theodor Herzl School, a sanctuary for Jewish children in Berlin, led by a remarkable woman: Paula Fürst." He emphasized that Paula Fürst provided hope, safety, and education to these children amid growing hostility outside their classrooms.
Another tweet detailed Erika's escape to the United States through her stepmother's efforts. According to Schiff on January 27, 2025: "Erika herself escaped to the U.S. through the courage of her stepmother – who secured an affidavit and a visa." In America, Erika built a new life as an artist, teacher, and mother. Unfortunately, her grandparents and their families perished in Auschwitz.
Additionally, Schiff recounted an episode from Erika's childhood when she was only 13 years old. On January 27, 2025 he tweeted: "At 13, Erika sent her 8-year-old brother on a Kindertransport to England." This was described as "A dark train filled with children sent into the arms of strangers," with hopes of escaping Nazi violence.
