Washington, DC â€“ On June 15, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) released the following statement after the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA).

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) sought to reverse decades of shameful U.S. policy that separated Native American children from their families and tribes. It has been a pillar of child welfare policy for over four decades.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling to uphold ICWA represents not only a significant win for Native Tribes and children but also a renewed commitment to the constitutional relationship between Congress and tribal nations.

I will always support tribal sovereignty and hope that this decision will end the political assaults that have long threatened to undermine it.
