Happy Hanukkah! In 2022, this eight-day “festival of lights” begins today, Sunday, December 18, at sundown, and continues through Monday, December 26. This year’s celebration is quite special, with the eight days of Hanukkah coinciding with other winter holidays such as the Winter Solstice (12/21), Christmas (12/25), and Kwanzaa (12/26-1/1).
Hanukkah, also spelled Chanukah, or Chanukkah is called the “Festival of Lights” or “Feast of the Maccabees” in Hebrew.
Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem by the lighting of candles on each day of the festival.
Potato pancakes (latkes), doughnuts (sufganiyot), and other treats fried in oil, which recall the miracle of the oil, are popular. Children receive presents and gifts of money, which is sometimes distributed in the form of chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil.
