Adam Schiff, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 30th district since 2001, has posted a series of statements on social media questioning former President Donald Trump’s actions and intentions regarding Venezuela.
On January 4, 2026, Schiff raised several concerns: “A few questions among many that Donald Trump avoided today, and the American people deserve an answer to:
— What is the Trump Administration’s actual plan to “run” Venezuela?
— Will President Trump deploy American troops to Venezuela? If so, how many and at what cost?”
Two days later, on January 5, Schiff commented on the end of Nicolás Maduro’s leadership in Venezuela: “No one should bemoan the end of Maduro’s reign.
But Trump’s illegal operation is about more than just Venezuela.
It’s about a President believing he has no limit to his power as Commander in Chief.
Congress must say no to this abuse of force.”
On January 6, Schiff further alleged broader motives behind Trump’s policy toward Venezuela: “It wasn’t about drugs.
It wasn’t even just about regime change.
Donald Trump’s plans for Venezuela reveal a scheme to enrich his Big Oil billionaire friends, and a willingness to put American troops at risk to make it happen.”
Schiff has been serving in Congress since replacing James E. Rogan in 2001. He previously served in the California Senate from 1996 to 2000. Born in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1960 and currently residing in Burbank, Schiff holds degrees from Stanford University (BA) and Harvard University (JD).
